有许多人以为《新月集》是一部写给儿童看的书。这是他们受了广告上附注的“儿歌”（“child poems”）二字的暗示的缘故。实际上，《新月集》虽然未尝没有几首儿童可以看得懂的诗歌，而泰戈尔之写这些诗，却决非为儿童而作的。它并不是一部写给儿童读的诗歌集，乃是一部叙述儿童心理、儿童生活的最好的诗歌集。这正如俄国许多民众小说家所作的民众小说，并不是为民众而作，而是写民众的生活的作品一样。我们如果认清了这一点，便不会无端地引起什么怀疑与什么争论了。
我的译文自己很不满意，但似乎还很忠实，且不至看不懂。
读者的一切指教，我都欢迎地承受。
我最后应该向许地山君表示谢意。他除了鼓励我以外，在这个译本写好时，还曾为我校读了一次。

再版自序
《新月集》译本出版后，曾承几位朋友批评，这是我要对他们表白十二分的谢意的。现在乘再版的机会，把第一版中所有错误，就所能觉察到的，改正一下。读者诸君及朋友们如果更有所发现，希望他们能够告诉我，俾得于第三版时再校正。

i paced alone on the road across the field while the sunset was hiding its last gold like a miser。
the daylight sank deeper and deeper into the darkness； and the widowed land； whose harvest had been reaped； lay silent。

his village home lay there at the end of the waste land； beyond the sugar…cane field； hidden among the shadows of the banana and the slender areca palm； the cocoa…nut and the dark green jack…fruit tress。

if baby only wanted to； he could fly up to heaven this moment。

it is not for nothing that he never wants to speak。
the one thing he wants is to learn mother's words from mother's lips。 that is why he looks so innocent。
baby had a heap of gold and pearls； yet he came like a beggar on to this earth。

this dear little naked mendicant pretends to be utterly helpless； so that he may beg for mother's wealth of love。
