督教右派开局良好，但他们漫不经心的分道扬镳，对保守主义的文化事业——如反堕胎运动——没有提供什么帮助。南希·里根（Nancy Reagan）在删除1987年国情咨文中有关堕胎讨论的内容时说道：“我对反堕胎不感兴趣。”＇64＇
有些保守派牢骚满腹，但右派谁会真正怀疑里根所取得的巨大成功——赢得冷战、重振美国经济、恢复美国的自豪感——会逊色于这些失败呢？里根就任总统之初就彻底打败了劳工组织，解雇了空中交通管制员工会的1万名罢工人员。尽管如此，该工会还是为数不多支持总统命令的工会之一。1981年至1985年间，军费增加了1/3。他的减税做法损害了进步主义，使最高税率从70％骤降到33％。他利用最高法院首席大法官沃伦·伯格1986年辞职的机会，提拔最高法院最保守的法官威廉·伦奎斯特为首席大法官，并提名另一名保守派安东尼·斯卡利亚（Antonin Scalia）补缺，从而彻底改造了最高法院。
